Discovering Niigata’s Japanese Pears: A Taste of Tsuchida Nouen

This summer, I had the opportunity to visit Sanjo in Niigata, a region celebrated for its high-quality craftsmanship in items like Japanese knives and sake cups. But the true highlight of my trip was visiting Tsuchida Nouen, a farm dedicated to producing Japanese pears. Known for their incredible juiciness and refreshing texture, Japanese pears are a product my customers eagerly anticipate every season.

However, due to FDA regulations, exporting these pears has long been a challenge. Fortunately, Tsuchida Nouen is the first farm in Niigata able to meet the strict export documentation requirements, and their pears are now ready to make their way to the U.S. and Europe market.

The Aki Tsuki Pear: A Unique Variety

During my visit, I sampled the Aki Tsuki (秋月) variety of Japanese pear. The texture is reminiscent of the La France pear but maintains the signature juiciness that Japanese pears are famous for.

Though the pears weren’t quite at their peak yet during my visit, I could already sense the richness of flavor that develops from October to December, when they reach full ripeness. At that point, they grow larger and become even juicier—a treat that’s well worth the wait.

Introducing Japanese Pears to the U.S.

We have already started introducing these premium pears to our customers in the U.S., and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. At an event on October 23rd, we presented the Aki Tsuki pears at the Tsuchida farm booth, where they quickly sold out. The next day, we participated in an official event led by the government, where many omakase chefs and executive chefs sampled the pears and were equally impressed.

As a seasonal fruit, Japanese pears fit perfectly with the philosophy of using in-season ingredients, and chefs are eager to incorporate them into their menus.
