What is Yuzu?
Yuzu (柚子) is a Japanese citrus from Kochi Prefecture, celebrated for its intensely aromatic zest and tart, complex juice. Unlike lemon or lime, it has a floral, herbal quality that makes it irreplaceable in Japanese cooking — used more for its fragrance and peel than for eating whole. Available fresh from October to December, each pack holds 3 whole yuzu.

Where sudachi is small and sharply tart, yuzu is rounder and more perfumed — the aromatic one. Both the zest and the juice are prized: a little grated peel lifts a dish with scent, while the juice brings a fragrant tartness to sauces and drinks.

How to enjoy

Use the peel and the juice, not the flesh. Grate the zest over sashimi, grilled fish, soups, or rice for an instant lift of fragrance. Squeeze the juice into ponzu, dressings, or a citrus dessert, and add it to hot pots at the end. It also flavors cocktails and hot drinks — a strip of peel or a spoon of juice. A single fruit goes a long way.

Pairing notes — sashimi, grilled fish, ponzu, hot pot, honey and desserts, and cocktails or hot toddies.

Good to know: A seasonal citrus, available October–December. Keep refrigerated and use promptly for the best aroma — the fragrance is at its peak when fresh. Fresh fruit; a pre-order item that usually takes about a week to prepare. Any transit damage should be reported to the carrier directly.
