Brought directly from Ibaraki — only by Hokkaido Uni Shop.

What is Toro Yakiimo?
Toro yakiimo (とろ焼き芋) is a Japanese roasted sweet potato — already baked, then frozen, so it thaws ready to eat. This is the KOTARO Brand version from Ibaraki, made from Beniharuka (紅はるか), the variety known for a dense, sticky flesh and deep sweetness. Before roasting, the potatoes are aged for a full year, which converts more of the starch to sugar.

That aging is what gives it the "toro" name — the flesh turns sticky, moist, and smooth, close to a mitsu-imo (honey potato), with a honey-like richness. The sweetness leans on maltose, so it stays clean on the finish rather than cloying. Slow roasting draws the sugar out and gives it a creamy, melting texture. It's a handmade product.

How to enjoy

It's already roasted, so the simplest way is to thaw it in the refrigerator and eat it as is — cold, like a dessert, or warmed briefly in an oven or microwave to bring back that just-roasted softness. From there it goes into desserts (sweet potato ice cream, Mont Blanc, kinton) or savory dishes, and because the flesh is already soft and sweet, it mashes and folds in easily.

Pairing notes — hojicha, roasted green tea, black coffee, or vanilla ice cream.

Handling: Ships frozen. Thaw in the refrigerator, then eat as-is or warm it through. Do not refreeze after thawing. A handmade product.
