What is Tosa Musk Melon?
Tosa musk melon (土佐メロン) is a Japanese musk melon from Kochi Prefecture. Kochi's warm climate suits melon growing, and the fruit is known for a high sugar content, a soft, smooth flesh, and a floral aroma. Each melon is about 1.4kg, with the netted skin that forms as it ripens.

It's grown by the same farm as our Ryoma musk melon. The Ryoma is the larger, top-tier melon — finer netting, a more delicate flavor — while this Tosa is the slightly smaller size at a more approachable point, still with the concentrated sweetness and even, juicy, melting flesh Japanese musk melons are known for. A good size for a gift or a fruit course at home.

When it's ripe

A musk melon ships firm and ripens at room temperature. Two signs tell you it's ready: the stem (the T-shaped vine on top) dries out — the base stays green while the tips go brown — and the bottom of the melon softens, giving slightly when you press it with a thumb. Once ripe, chill it a few hours before serving and eat within a day or two.

How to cut & enjoy

Cut off the stem, then slice the melon in half top-to-bottom rather than across — the bottom is the sweetest part, and cutting lengthwise gives every piece an even share of it. Scoop out the seeds and pulp with a spoon (don't throw them away — strain the pulp through a sieve for pure melon juice). Cut each half into quarters, run the knife between skin and flesh to free it, then slice into bite-size wedges.

Eat it chilled as is, or serve with prosciutto, over vanilla ice cream, or as a fruit course.

Pairing notes — on its own, with prosciutto, over vanilla ice cream, or with a sparkling wine.

Ripening: Arrives firm to allow for shipping. Keep at room temperature until the stem dries and the bottom softens to a gentle press, then refrigerate and eat within a day or two. A seasonal fruit — availability follows the harvest. This is a pre-order item and usually takes about a week to prepare.
