What is Kegani?
Kegani (毛蟹), or horsehair crab, is a prized Hokkaido delicacy from the Pacific waters around the island. It's smaller than snow or king crab, and gets its name from the spiky hairs covering its shell. What it lacks in size it makes up in the meat — dense, sweet, and firm — and in its kani miso (蟹味噌), the crab's innards, treasured in Japanese cuisine. This is a whole 500g crab, pre-boiled and frozen, ready to thaw and eat.

Unlike picked crab-meat sticks, a whole kegani is the full experience: you crack the legs for the sweet meat and spoon the rich kani miso from the body. It's already cooked, so no boiling is needed — just thaw and enjoy.

How to enjoy

Thaw fully before eating — overnight in the refrigerator, or 3–4 hours at room temperature. Because it's pre-boiled, it's ready to eat straight after thawing: chilled as-is is the classic way. Crack the legs for the meat, and don't miss the kani miso in the body — scoop it out on its own, or mix it with a little leg meat. It also warms through steamed or grilled, and the meat tops rice or sushi.

Pairing notes — ponzu, sudachi or lemon, the kani miso with warm sake, and a dry Japanese sake.

Thawing: Ships frozen and pre-boiled. Thaw fully before serving — overnight in the refrigerator, or 3–4 hours in the kitchen — then eat as-is, no cooking needed. Do not refreeze after thawing. This is a pre-order item and usually takes about a week to prepare. Any transit damage should be reported to the carrier directly.
